This combined with the editing gives Empire Strikes Back a great pace. However, it is an immensely satisfying cliché as it allows for a great variety of scenes and content. It is cliché as it follows the classic second film in a trilogy pattern of having the characters separate and go off in their respective directions. This is not a slight on A New Hope and Return of the Jedi but the former is written by George Lucas (enough said) and the latter ends with a battle between stormtroopers and teddy bears.Īs well as the aforementioned darker tone, Empire Strikes Back has multiple story threads running throughout. Penned by Lawrence Kasdan, the film has the most investing story and characters of the original trilogy. This nicely leads into the writing of Empire Strikes Back. This is probably due to having had more time to practice acting and also because he has more to work with in terms of character development. This is helped by the fact that Mark Hamill gives a better performance in this film in my opinion.

That constant battle between the light and dark within him makes for such an engrossing watch in Empire Strikes Back. Although both characters are still interesting, they don’t quite have the same complexity of Empire Strikes Back Luke.

Alternatively, in Return of the Jedi Luke is wise, patient and highly trained. In A New Hope Luke is your typical naïve eager hero in white shining armour (literally). This is personified perfectly in the cave scene on Dagobah. This extends to the character of Luke, who struggles with his own internal darkness throughout the film. It still has the charm and humour of A New Hope but balances the levity with more mature and adult themes. For starters it is one of the darkest Star Wars films and although later ones have technically matched it in terms of darkness, Empire Strikes Back was the first to explore it. It gets this title for a number of reasons. It goes without saying that Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars film.

Although I have seen Empire Strikes Back countless times, it felt like a completely new viewing experience this time round. There is something special about seeing a classic film at the cinema. Having never gotten the chance to see it on the big screen before I was very excited when news of the rerelease reached my ears. This year marks the 40 th anniversary of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, and to celebrate it is back on our cinema screens.
